چکیده

A new computational aeroacoustic model suitable for the prediction of turbulent airfoil trailing edge noise is presented. The method (known as the RANS based Statistical Noise Model or RSNM) combines numerically generated, mean turbulence information with a Green’s function for a semi-infinite half-plane to generate a far-field acoustic auto-spectrum. As a preliminary application of the method, the acoustic spectrum created by turbulent flow past the sharp trailing edge of a flat plate at a Reynolds number (Re) of 5.5×105 is calculated. Four different turbulence models are used to provide the required mean flow data which is used with RSNM. The predicted spectra are shown to agree well with a semi-empirical model from the literature.

Numerical study of the effects of trailing-edge bluntness on highly turbulent hydro-foil flows

Flow-induced noise from fully submerged lifting bodies experiencing turbulent trailing edge flows continues to pose undesirable effects for many marine propulsion systems and control surfaces. This noises arises from unsteady oscillatory flow has been shown to be highly dependent on trailing edge geometry, which can also lead to unacceptable structural vibrations. This paper presents a numerical...

The Prediction of Noise due to Jet Turbulence Convecting past Flight Vehicle Trailing Edges

High intensity acoustic radiation occurs when turbulence convects past airframe trailing edges. A mathematical model is developed to predict this acoustic radiation. The model is dependent on the local flow and turbulent statistics above the trailing edge of the flight vehicle airframe. These quantities are dependent on the jet and flight vehicle Mach numbers and jet temperature. A term in the ...

Computation of trailing edge noise from an incompressible flow calculation

A new methodology for calculating low Mach number trailing edge noise is developed and tested. The input to this methodology is the fluctuating surface pressure obtained from an incompressible, turbulent flow calculation. The surface pressure is used to calculate an intermediate incident pressure. This pressure in conjunction with the sound-hard boundary condition yields the scattered pressure ...

Unsteady RANS Simulation of High Reynolds Number Trailing Edge Flow

Unsteady vortex shedding at a trailing edge may cause pressure fluctuations and strong tonal noise which can have important consequences to the performance of marine and aeronautical type lifting surfaces. This paper presents data from unsteady RANS simulation of high Reynolds number trailing edge flow. It aims to identify and quantify dominant features of the trailing edge flow field over a tw...

Parallel Optimization for LES

We developed a parallel Bayesian optimization algorithm for large eddy simulations. These simulations challenge optimization methods because they take hours or days to compute, and their objective function contains noise as turbulent statistics that are averaged over a finite time. Surrogate based optimization methods, including Bayesian optimization, have shown promise for noisy and expensive ...
